After his last two BALs - Beethoven Op111 and Mozart K 467 I will be shocked to the core if DON does not choose a Fortepiano recording .

        .

... always reckless to predict what DON is likely to choose : if I were a gambling man I wd go for the ECM recording with Schiff on an 1820 Brodmann.

Just looked at the website to see what's coming up, no mention of the Schubert BaL but they do include the Krystian Zimerman version as one of the records of the year!

I do hope you haven't wagered too much on it...

                  I certainly don't like these two-fer BaLs!

...and gets short shrift from DON. Dismissed without hearing a note! Glad he seems to like Pires.

A deathly silence has fallen ...... Maybe it was the presence of two people but AMcG's rather fatuous interjections seemed to cancel out some of DON's more egregious contributions so he seemed a lot less irritating than usual. And his judgements seemed to me to be pretty much bang-on. Sorry that Staier didn't get a mention (his recording may currently be unavailable) but very glad to have made the acquaintance of Malcolm Bilson. And, unless my concentration faltered, the great first movement repeat controversy wasn't even raised. But very enjoyable 45 minute listen (and it had me scurrying to buy the Pires - a worthy winner).

Tempted much by what I heard of the Bilson, but unwilling to pay the download price for lossless, let alone make do with mp3 at a similarly inflated charge. Discs close to unobtainable other than at even more exorbitant outlay. Very remiss to omit mention of Brendel's 'solution' to the repeat issue.

I must have missed the reason for discarding the Lupu.
Anybody remember why he decided against it ?

Anyway, as ever I really enjoyed DONs review, and learned a lot from it.

                            .

... I feel very lucky to have picked up the entire Bilson Schubert as it first came out. Even then I had to rely on a Hungarian music administrator friend to obtain from Budapest a particularly-difficult-to-locate CD in the set...

I much enjoyed this BAL. I think the Staier is deemed not to be 'regularly available' and so was not considered, which was a pity

It was only made clear at the very end that the Pires we had been listening to was that from the recent DG recording rather than her earlier Erato disc.

I very much enjoyed the samples of Horowitz, Lupu, Haskil, and Kalish.

I played the Krystian Zimerman recording yesterday and rather liked it. I'll be putting on the Maria jao Pires one on soon.

Yes - at least I decided that the combination of DON and a "Twofer" was more than I could bear (and with AMcG contributing throughout the programme as well, I avoided R3 as if it were ... well, a weekday morning).

I take it that the Pires that has been so frequently praised on this Thread was the "winner"?
