A deathly silence has fallen ...... Maybe it was the presence of two people but AMcG's rather fatuous interjections seemed to cancel out some of DON's more egregious contributions so he seemed a lot less irritating than usual. And his judgements seemed to me to be pretty much bang-on. Sorry that Staier didn't get a mention (his recording may currently be unavailable) but very glad to have made the acquaintance of Malcolm Bilson. And, unless my concentration faltered, the great first movement repeat controversy wasn't even raised. But very enjoyable 45 minute listen (and it had me scurrying to buy the Pires - a worthy winner).

I must have missed the reason for discarding the Lupu.
Anybody remember why he decided against it ?
Anyway, as ever I really enjoyed DONs review, and learned a lot from it.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.

... I feel very lucky to have picked up the entire Bilson Schubert as it first came out. Even then I had to rely on a Hungarian music administrator friend to obtain from Budapest a particularly-difficult-to-locate CD in the set...
I much enjoyed this BAL. I think the Staier is deemed not to be 'regularly available' and so was not considered, which was a pity
It was only made clear at the very end that the Pires we had been listening to was that from the recent DG recording rather than her earlier Erato disc.
I very much enjoyed the samples of Horowitz, Lupu, Haskil, and Kalish.

I take it that the Pires that has been so frequently praised on this Thread was the "winner"?Numquam Satis!
