    Thanks, Barbs

    - Emerson runner up by the sounds of it
    - it was indeed; a surprise for me - I've been allergic to the Emersons for as long as I can remember, but this sounded very good indeed. (Impressed by the Smetana and Alban Bergs, too.)

(Mind you - I couldn't find the "DVD" version of the Takacs mentioned in Alpie's list, either. )
According to a review on Amazon the Decca recording dates from 1988-90, i.e. when the Takács were an all-Hungarian line-up (Edward Dusinberre took over as leader in 1993).... the Hyperion recording is from 2008 according to the Hyperion website, when the violist was, as she still is, Geraldine Walther (who took over from Roger Tapping - 1995-2005, who took over from founder member Gábor Ormai who died in 1995). So, sounds as if she went for the older recording.

I can vouch for that fgh! You panned my Art of Fugue by the Emersons when I had just bought it - can't remember when, but I remember your saying that they were too polished. I still play them, and I think of you.

            Hiya ferney,

"...allergic to the Emersons". It's a good job you weren't making the recommendations for the BAL programme then!

In the highly unlikely event that I'll ever be asked to present a BaL, I'd start with "blind" testing. On that account, the Emersons would've got through to "Round Two". Heck! I might even buy it!

                Some razor sharp Brahms.
