BaL 25.11.17 - Brahms: String Quartet no. 3 in B flat, Op. 67

    0930
Building a Library: Katy Hamilton explores Brahms's Third String Quartet in B flat major, Op 67. Brahms composed this quartet 1875 and dedicated it to a cellist friend, even though the cellist is the one instrument that doesn't get a prominent solo in the work. The work is composed in a lighter vein than we sometimes associate with Brahms's chamber works; he described it as "a useless trifle, to avoid facing the serious countenance of a symphony", by which he meant work on his First Symphony, which was premiered a week later.

      .

      ... many thanks, Alpie!

And there is Brahms's own transcription for piano four hands - excellently played here :

Just the Amadeus DG here. Very happy with them, I don't intend any additions. But I thought that about DSCH 11 last week and ended up buying the Wigglesworth and the Haitink!

Wiggelsworth was a couple of years below me at prep school!

              Hiya maestro,

Mark Wigglesworth a most underrated conductor whose talent deserves a job with top international orchestra in my opinion. I love his Shostakovich symphony cycle.

Well ... "the" Takacs (as emboldened in Alpie's edited OP). BUT which of their recordings (Hyperion, or Decca) I didn't hear: she did say at one point to "check the website" for details. Maybe my brain is full, but I can't find where these details are.

(Mind you - I couldn't find the "DVD" version of the Takacs mentioned in Alpie's list, either. )

I have the Hyperionrecording of the Takacs playing this. Is there a need to nuy the Decca?

It was the Decca Takacs - Emerson runner up by the sounds of it
