    BaL 4.11.17 - Vivaldi: La Stravaganza Op.4

    0930
Building a Library on Vivaldi's La Stravaganza with Simon Heighes. Vivaldi called his Op.4 set of concertos La stravaganza, or The Extravagance. All of the concertos are scored for solo violin, with extra soloists in some movements. Within this framework, Vivaldi created a set of concertos of remarkable invention.

    Available versions:

    Feredico Agostini, I Musici
    Fabio Biondi, Europa Galante
    Francesco Cerrato, Armoniosa
    Federico Guglielmo, L'Arte dell'Arco
Monica Huggett, The Academy of Ancient Music, Christopher Hogwood (download)
Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Georg Kallweit
Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner
Alberto Martini, I Filarmonici di Bologna
    The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock
Rachel Podger, Arte Dei Suonatori Baroque Orchestra
    Frederic de Roos, La Pastorella
    I Solisti Italiani
Andrew Watkinson, Citiy of London Sinfonia, Nicholas Kraemer

    I have:

Monica Huggett, The Academy of Ancient Music, Christopher Hogwood
    Fabio Biondi, Europa Galante
Academy of St Martin in the Fields, SirNeville Marriner

All quite different. I don't envisage any additions to my collection - but one never knows!

Podger is outstanding and the Pinnock set a benchmark for me .

So do I. I can't imagine any on the list being on that level... except Pinnock, which I must hear, and Biondi, whose CD contains IIRC only a few of the twelve op.4 concertos.

This will be good. I don't have much in the way of his concerti recordings, so I'll be listening to this. Looks like I be looking forward to hearing the mariner one, methinks!

Podger is the only recording I have. (Mr McGregor liked it in 2003)

The only one I have to date is the Huggett and Hogwood. (Sounds like an old music-hall act!)

Very tempted by Podger, I must say. It will be a really fascinating comparison.

Ditto. Excellent sounding SACD to boot

Yes, can't wait - I have been listening to various extracts from the different recordings myself this week...an interesting range of approaches.

I forgot to mention that I have Trevor Pinnock's recording of these concerti. So I hope ASMF/Sir Neville and Trevor Pinnock are up there.

So far (10.06) Simon Heighes's choice seems to be heading for Rachel Podger.

You were right, ds! I still have a fondness for the Hugget set, but wouldn't mind getting hold of the Podger as well. What really surprised me was that Podger's set is already 15 years old - it seems like only yesterday that it came out.
