I have Barshai & Jansons in this. I heard the Prom performance this year and that was very good. It will be a very interesting BaL.

I hope the Foru Members here treat this work for what it is. For the music alone.
Well That was my original point when I started a thread on the piece—for years I thought it was a movie soundtrack for some missing film, but a few years ago it clicked for me as an outstandingly original Symphony that may borrow techniques that we tend to associate with film music but does so in a way that somehow enhances the Symphonic argument. Unlike a lot of the Composer’s actual film music, there are no cheap tricks here; the climaxes are crushing and are built from the ground up.
The only version that I have added is Barshai, which is superb. Sonically it’s outclassed by Kitaenko which is one of the most impressive SACDs that I’ve heard. I’d love to hear the Haitink so I might seek that out.

Petrushka: perhaps you didn't see in #9 above that I'd asked who gave the first British performance but now that you quote Robert Simpson's programme note for it, perhaps you can reveal if Sargent or someone else was the conductor, along with the date. Thanks.

I can do better than that and provide you with a link to a recording of that very performance: https://pastdaily.com/2014/02/05/bbc...-week-concert/

The quote from the Simpson programme note came from the sleeve note for the Kondrashin LP.

All well and good, but where's the link to David Matthews's article in The Listener? It's listed at http://www.david-matthews.co.uk/writ...s.asp?pfv=True but there's no link to the text. Indeed, at this stage even the Gale archive is unable to offer access. Anyone know a library which might hold a physical copy to peruse?

Many thanks indeed. It's amazing what's out there these days! I look forward to hearing what Sargent made of it.

What do people think of the Prom performance this year? I know it's been mentioned before but be good to hear again, especially with this work being a BaL review?

I got the WDR/Barshai recordings in this 27 CD Brilliant Box some time ago, for a ridiculously low price.

I see that Brilliant have now issued another version, adding a further 22 discs with songs/operas etc - the complete works except for 'The Nose', for some reason.

The original set pictured below will suffice for me.

It hasn't been broadcast yet - coming up (as they say) on 11th November.

... of the 11th month, too! (And guess what time it's being broadcast? That's right! Half-past-nine, as usual. )

                              Indeed.

I started the thread much earlier than is usual, because the work was already being discussed on a different thread, and things could have become confusing . . .

Today would normally be the day to start this thread (the day when it first appeared on the Radio 3 web-page). I listened to the Haitink this morning - stunning; I don't really need another version.
