You're going to be busy, ferneymelad!

Seriously, does not liking something at all, make one a snob? I don't think so. Anyway, I'm with Poulenc (and I don't think he was a snob )

    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments

I know I responded about the Cesar Franck D minor somewhere but.... apparently not here.

I too can become obsessed with it - the rhythms, the tunes, the irresistible momentum.. favourites range from Paray to Karajan (on Toshiba, of course) Dutoit to Van Otterloo, and a remarkably dramatic 1940 Mengelberg with the RCOA....(best: Pristine).
With HD all the way on the Liège/Langrée.... best of the recent crop (that I've heard...).

If I had to choose one? Detroit/Paray/Mercury Stereo, no doubt at all..... Heard once, never forgotten...!

Monteux, Munch, Boult, Barbirolli but for something almost completely different is a movement arranged by Billy May and recorded by a big band conducted by Glenn Gray on the 'Shall we swing' along with a few other interesting clever but maybe slightly irreverant arrangements.

The single Mercury CD was coupled with Rach 2 - Paray was never one to hang about in his performances but cuts in the Rach were customary back in the late fifties!

Do we know the audio status of its manifestation on Naxos Classical Archives?

I can't find anything about it... Presumably, as good as the latest Mercury release...

Caliban ... If you click this link it will tell you that the Paray on Naxos is the 1953 mono version, out-of-copyright under former UK and current EU law, but "not available in the USA due to possible copyright restrictions." It is also only available as a download, not a CD. My guess is that they've obtained a copy of the old Mercury LP and are simply using that. In any case, they can't have obtained licensing rights from Mercury because if they had, there'd be no restrictions in the USA ...

Conveniently buy, stream or download at Naxos anytime. Add 9.80530 from Naxos Classical Archives to your classical music collection today.

The same early mono version has also come out on Pristine Audio, but at least with them you can buy it as a CD, as well as a download, in typically crisp Mercury sonics, also from a refurbished LP ...

Terrific performance - in the local Scots patois, he gies it laldy. And it's none the worse for such a full-blooded approach.

Having disposed of the Bernstein, I have only the Concertgebouw/Chailly (but on CD).

Isn't one of Furtwangler's recordings in that "Big Box", Alpie?

EDIT: Yes! Box 11 in that Box of Boxes!

I don't think anyone has commented on the intriguing choice of reviewer to take charge of this BAL - Mahan Esfahani, always stimulating, amusing and outspoken. I shall certainly be listening, for his take on the piece, as well as to hear which favoured runners and riders meet with his approval.

Oh and thank you seabright for your #70 which answers my query

Just Masur & Karajan in my collection (possibly others lurking that I can't recall).

I fancy acquiring the Bernstein NYP 1959 on Sony. It's quite cheap on a Qobuz 16 bit CD quality download. Comes with Dvorak 7. Just £3.09.

I'm assuming it's the later DG Bernstein symphony in D minor that's getting cat-calls. Am I right?
