BaL 23.09.17 - Franck: Symphony in D minor

    0930
Building a Library: Mahan Esfahani recommends a recording of César Franck's Symphony in D minor.
Today, a new recording of Franck's only symphony is a rare event and it has all but disappeared from the concert hall. But with its satisfying cyclic form and impressive fusion of French and German musical traditions it was once a work that every self-respecting maestro had in his repertoire and which generated an impressive recorded legacy, a veritable Who's Who of the great conductors of the last century. There have been signs, though, of a renewed interest in it among some of today's conductors, represented by a handful of more recent recordings.

A work that has lost favour these last few years. I remember hearing Sir Alex Gibson do it with the SNO circa 1985. Lovely piece although one which really sorts out the men from the boys in conducting terms!

Karajan's EMI is pretty good, IMHO, with, I think, the Paris Orchestra. I'm sure there was a CfP version with Paavo Berglund. Must check

I've just checked and there appears to have been a Berglund version but it doesn't seem to have come out on cd.

Was it with the BSO ? I note that there is a Silvestri version in the big Icon box but I am too busy being thrilled by his mono New World at the moment to put it on . Cantelli's version sounds like it is trying to escape the sound quality - a shame he did not get a chance to record it with the Philharmonia.

Yes, it's the BSO and was recorded in 1976 and was reviewed in the February 1977 Gramophone. It's a so so review and suggests that Boult or Karajan might be better bets. (A typo made the last sentence read a 'Boult OF Karajan' - Freudian slip!).

            Maybe that's why it's disappeared.

Reviewers change their opinions so . I recall the Karajan being reissued on I think HMV master Series in the mid 1980s and getting panned in Gramophone as turgid !

I had forgotten the Boult . I remember enjoying it on the Great Conductors series double CD no you remind me but evidently not enough to have remembered it !

The Beecham version in Paris [?IIRC] was the one I was brought up on - followed by Giulini - and in its day the recommended version. Both late 50s and as far a recommendables hors de combat but nevertheless still good to hear. I never got on with Karajan - he was pushed into helping the PO because his wife was French and he did little to do with them really!!

CFP40347 coupled with the Symphonic Variations with Kersenbaum as soloist - not on CD as yet to my knowledge.

I'm beginning to think this Summer BaL is getting a bit OTT, with 8 since the last "real" BaL which was only a couple of weeks ago.

Dutoit on Decca is very good.

There is of course the Herreweghe - but I lent that Faure Requiem to a friend before listening to the Franck - must get that CD back .

It is only 5 - 5 and 6 are last year's resuscitated- No7 actually just follows on from No 3

I have this work, but not catalogued it, somehow. I cannot find the recording I have, although, I mostly have his organ music output.

I used to enjoy this symphony, but recently I picked up the Beecham and found it boringly repetitive.

Still love the violin sonata though!
