It must be quite hard for you, then, being a member of a forum for Radio 3 listeners.

A life-enhancing and enthusiastic BAL from SW to get the new season underway. I'll investigate both recommendations from a very varied and fascinating choice of performances.

Having recommended versions in both HIPP and non-HIPP seems to be the ideal. I hope other reviewers do likewise.

I wasn't. The Baboráks sounded fine, but not so that I'd want to part with money for it, and I'm not particularly interested in the Concertos arranged for quintet.

No - HIPP Pip, hooray (and the other three) quite satisfactory for me.

Agreed, I got a lot out of this review. Also tended to agree with SW's selections and comments, Pip Eastop's being the only version I own at present. David Pyatt sounded great, but let down by murky recording. The recording that caught my ear which didn't make it to the final shortlist was by Stephen Stirling and The Fibonacci Sequence - going to listen to that in full. And also the 'winner'...

Yes, sounded consistently excellent to me. I wondered what it was coupled with, as AMcG didn't mention (unless I missed it) - agreed, not interested in that. But of course the joys of downloading mean it doesn't matter, still got loads of Presto vouchers left from Christmas, and so I think I'll cherry-pick the Quintet in this version.

                That's very good!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
