Just bought the Kubelik for 96p on Amazon. It's coupled with some Smetana we don't know.

Surprised there has been no mention of Bakala. His Prague (not Brno as stated in the OP) Radio recording is available from Supraphon and other labels. An interesting historical document if not a main recommendation.

So after a very interesting round up - including some really wild Klemperer, we get back to the version I originally bought on LP - Karel Ancerl. I agree it's one of the best - and the one I turn to most often. A benchmark very hard to beat.

Serebrier with the Czech State Philharmonic, Brno was also not mentioned. Another fine recording which should, I feel, have been considered a potential contender.

I rather like the versions I have. Abbado's 2nd version with the BPO, Ed Gardner's with the Bergens, Mackerras with the VPO andCzech PO.

A great little gem, this CD - the Smetana is also excellent. 96p very well-spent!

Do try Kubelik and Ancerl too though. I always felt Mackerras was not quite there - though very good. Some of the other Czech and eastern European conductors are also worth trying.

Ondrej Lenard - Slovak Radio Orchestra....... Naxos, for example.

(But Mackerras & the VPO - in all their Janacek recordings - still top of my own list.)

Ancerl still beats Mackerras in some works, IMO.

Yes - you made that clear in your "not all there" comment in #37. I disagree

This is a work that demands to be heard in concert. Mrs. PG and I heard it in the Usher Hall a few years ago played by the Czech Philharmonic under Belohlavek some years ago and it nearly took the roof off! Strange that, afaik, he didn't record it.

... ferney - did you listen to this BAL? - I know you're not a pertickler fan of the Times's music correspondent - but - I found it a helpful and informative run-through. I learnt from it. I shall probably get the Ancerl to add to my Mackerrae...

We enjoyed it too and learned a lot from it. The Ancerl is on my Amazon wish list.
