BaL 24.06.17 - Telemann: Water Music 'Hamburger Ebb' und Fluth'

    0930
Building a Library: Simon Heighes sifts through the available recordings of Telemann's Water Music 'Hamburger Ebb' und Fluth' and makes a recommendation. Commissioned in 1723 to celebrate the Hamburg Admiralty's centenary, Telemann's colourful suite of dances, with its allusions to ancient gods of wind and sea and to merry boatmen and the Elbe, hit the spot with Hamburgers to become the most popular and most performed secular work in his lifetime.

Has anyone counted up the number of Telemann's works? It's an awful lot!

Never mind the quantity, feel the quality!

      I have the old ASMF/Marriner version, on Argo. A great non-HIPP recording, I f I don't say so!

        .

... I don't know whether the Zefiro / Bernardini on arcana due to be released on 23 June

is different from the Zefiro / Bernardini already in the catalogue, apparently recorded at the Lufthansa Festival in 2003 -

          Non-HIPP recordings are often great.

... anyone would think that Alpie preferred Historically Uninformed Performance Practice - or perhaps Historically Misinformed Performance Practice ...

I do prefer music to be played in a way that will help it to sound its best. There will be different opinions on this of course.

You are quite right, though - Pre-HIPP recordings can be marvellous, 'though I wasn't at all keen on the Tafelmusik played at the end of today's Essential Classics.

The "Ebb and Flo" is Music I do not know at all - I think I've heard it once - and as this is a McGregor Exclusion Zone BaL, I shall tune in with high heighe hopes next week.

... of course they can. But I was surmising a preference for un-HIPP

... indeed, that Wenzinger Tafelmusik was dire in its heaviness. Just the sort of 1960s period style that Rob Cowan likes...

I only have the MAK/Goebel recording and that does very well for me, even though Goebel does drag out the slow opening of the overture a bit. Would like to hear the Pickett version.

It is indeed the same recording. And IMO the best one (also of the Handel Water Music it's combined with).

I wouldn't call those old recordings by Wenzinger dire though, I was pretty happy with them when they were the only ones to have moved in the direction of period style and instrumentation. I wouldn't listen to them any more though.

Thanks for recommending this recording back in December. Fortunately I struck while the iron was hot, and got it (Used: Very Good) for just over a fiver including p&p. It appears to have increase in price a little since than.

Many thanks for these suggestions, vinty - I was going to wait for the programme, but I suspect there'll be considerable price inflation then; and your judgement is one I trust at least as much as Mr Heighes'.
