For me the best Brendel (mischievous and playful as well as virtuosic and poetic: what you want, really!) is in the Philips Unpublished Live and Radio Performances 1968-2001 2-disc set.
Neither Richter is quite satisfactory, if my memory serves me: either poor sound (Praga) or problems with the piano (Philips). I also find Brautigam a little prosaic. Paul Lewis just over-pedals, for me.
The Schnabel contains some of the most philosophically probing playing even he (or anyone else?) ever managed. And he's never short of wit.

Just to confirm what Ferney has already said - I'm fine, and have been all week. I prepared the list of recordings whilst still living in North Yorkshire, then moved to Devon last Wednesday, but couldn't get internet access until today. So many thanks to silverstrione for starting the thread in my absence.

Wow! Both Kinderman and Rosen out of 'print', though the Kinderman is still available as a download, replete with lecture. Oh, and Gulda's earlier ORF recording (Orfeo) is also available in download form. Solchany gone too, though it can be had for silly money in the 50 CD EMI Classics Beethoven: The Collector's Edition. I have a spare copy of that set, for which I paid ÂŁ5 in an HMV sale.
[Not generally available but to be found in https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Be...o+works+vol.+6 is the January 1981 recording by Barenboim for DGG.]

On CD I have the Anda DG, Philips 'Stephen Bishop' and EMI Kovacevich, Paul Lewis, Bernard Roberts and Staier (my current go-to). Plus Rosen on LP, Symposium not CBS, which must be a tad unusual even if not unprecedented amongst boarders(?).
The one I'd throw out first is Paul Lewis, very disappointing IMHOI keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Just not my period/interest. But I shall try to listen, to find out what I've been missing, and what the appeal is to those of you who clearly find lots to admire in this work.
Shall certainly be listening to this BAL to see what I've been missing."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
