Ah! If only that had been available when I was 14. As it was, I had to rely on "advice" from Malcolm Butterthwaite, and ... well; he lied!

      Improvisation isn't just for music!

Still available for a pittance via the river folk.

Thanks for the reminder, I have that one somewhere, too.

It was a somewhat Pathetique filler for that first BBC MM coaver disc. Having dug it out, I am about to give the 'fill-up' a spin, a Proms performance from 8 August 1991.

If I go looking for it, I won't find it. When I try to find a CD of Four Last Songs, I'll bump into the Britten!

The vast majority of my BBC MM cover discs are stored in stackable plastic boxes from Poundworld. Each box holds around 40 CDs in their jewel cases. It is thus reasonably easy for me to find a specific disc if I can remember which issues it came with. This being the first disc issued, it was a doddle. While this Wigglesworth performance has the usual advantages of a live performance, I don't think it offers too much of a challenge to the NPO/Britten recording, or the LSO/Previn, come to that. I might listen to the Asbury and Pesek recordings later.

Would be interested in your thoughts on the Pesek, if you do indeed listen to it.

You do know about this listing of BBC MM CDs, don't you?

I posted the link in a thread somewhere, sometime.

Am listening to it now. It's the opening item in the EMI Benjamin Britten "Collector's Edition" (I am somewhat surprised that there was but the one collector). It starts well and has some interesting light and shade brought out, though ensemble is not always quite as tight as it might be, and some sections are a little too rushed for my taste. Not a library choice, but a worthy enough supplement to those others I mentioned earlier.

You're not the only one who doesn't like Sinfonia Da Requiem. As I was saying to Prince Philip the other day, when I was third mouthorgan under Arthur Nikisch, I turned to Dennis Brain, one of the best blowers I ever payed with, and said "do you like this?" and James Galway said "yes". I said "I never asked you!".

Not a statement one expects to read in a thread about Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da requiem. (As Harrison Birtwistle was saying to me the other day.)
