Absolutely - after next Saturday, the price will of course, rocket! Even if it doesn't take the gold medal.....

I have the Britten version, as well. Strongly advised to purchase!!!

Unsurprisingly, no Japanese conductor appears to have recorded the work. I wonder when one will risk the potential calumny?

Me too, gave it a spin yesterday. I heard it performed in 2011 by BBC NOW under Francois-Xavier Roth - it's a cracking piece.

Can't stand the piece. Played with the LSO under Hermann Scherchen, and five times under Rudolf Schwarz on tour wiin Eastern Europe - but then I've never liked anything written by either Britten or Tippet anyway.

My loss, I'm sure, but we all have our own choice.

And the point of your post is? (apart from namedropping)

I expressed an opinion, based upon my personal experience as a former professional orchestral musician who was involved in performances of these composers' works.

I was going to ask, why link Britten and Tippett, HS (or even mention Tippett), two utterly different composers?

How much conducting did Hans Richter-Haaser do? When I saw him in 1972 he was so stout that his embonpoint was pressed against the piano and his arms were at full stretch to reach the keyboard. I read that his technique suffered during the war while he was away from the piano being a German anti-aircraft gunner, but that he recovered it afterwards.

Intrigued by the Dresden Staatskapelle recording with Rudolf Kempe. I've known about it for years but never bought it so that one goes down on the list for further investigation.

I think RB's point is a fair one. Some of the information you provide is a tad gratuitous for the opinion you are expressing - and anyway, in post #1283 on the "Absent friends" thread, you explained at length that you wouldn't be commenting in threads and posts anymore and that "There must be many questions that members would like to ask about performances, conductors and musical events in those long gone years and I am happy to answer questions from other forumites.

So PM me and I too will answer your queries by private message, but I will make no comment or voice any opinion on the content of any forum post although I will continue to read them."

I assume something's caused you to have a change of heart.

Perhaps in the end HS needed his Forum 'fix'.

Not the first bean to have announced a final farewell before making a sudden return.

                                Let's not be too harsh.
