I only know of him by virtue of his splitting the Tchaikovsky Comp prize with John Lill (the same year Gidon Kremer won the violin section).

Krainev died 6 years ago at the age of 67. Though his recorded legacy is small, he was regarded as one of the foremost Russian pianists.

Yes, it's a terrific set, available at a good price here - strongly recommended (annoying packaging, though!).

I've added the recommended version to the list, in the vain hope that it really is generally available.

I know the two with erstwhile hubby Dutoit and the Berlin/Abbado, but what's Previn DVD like? I do note the the audio is PCM Stereo. That at least looks promising.

See #16 for the performance - presumably in much better sound on the DVD.

It certainly is. It was only issued a couple or so years ago by Melodiya. If one does not want to deal through Amazon, Presto Classical also have it.

Senior moment. I had actually checked that YouTube item out soon after it was originally linked to in #16. Picture should better definition on the DVD too. I have duly ordered it.

Shame she has never recorded (or played?) the 2nd, my favourite of the 5.

You're absolutely right. How on earth did I miss it?

Thanks PG. Unfortunately these days I am under strict orders about buying more CDs!!!, so I will investigate this on Spotify, that is the Krainex, as I have the Argerich/Dutoit box set, too. I quite like, also the one she recorded with Abbado and the Berliners.

It was a (Russian) she. She pointed out there were four Argerichs, implying they were all "decent", but plumped for Dutoit. I haven't heard Dutoit in full, but did a comparative listen of several performance recently, and Argerich/BPO/Abbado was my choice - ahead of Ashkenazy and Kissin. (Argerich/BPO/Abbado is also the Penguin and "Rough Guide" top choice.) In listening to the Krainev, in full, I find it rather lack-lustre, and nowhere near as vital or spontaneous as Argerich/BPO/Abbado. I'll not be purchasing it.

Thanks Maj. I might still give the reviewer's choice a listen. I am glad I am not the only one, who thinks that! I think yes has a lot of sponttenaity

Absolutely, glad to have been able to hear it this morning. Instantly grabbed by the Krainev/Kitaenko from the first extract played, and made a mental note to get it whatever the final choice, as a perfect complement to the Argeriches etc I already have.

Love the piece to bits, and can't wait to hear it afresh when I get the Krainev download - anyone know where to acquire a lossless? Prestoclassical don't seem to be offering it, just the box-set of CDs of all 5 concertos.

                            Great BAL.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I read in an old Gramophone piece that the reason Argerich has not played the 2nd is that she recognises she is not up to its demands. I would link to the article but quoting on this mobile is a right pain.
