A classic recording from Argerich/BPO/Abbado certainly the best around. Lang Lang and BPO/Rattle is an excellent recording too that I often play.

I had forgotten about the Lang/Rattle recording. I had gotten that as a download on my phone when I had a gift certificate as an amazon mp3. It's pretty good, but Argerich just seems to breathe fire.
I also have the Graffman/Szell as I bought the large Sony Graffman reissue box. I probably haven't listened to it yet...
I also remember a William Kapell recording that was pretty scintillating that I heard on a radio program devoted to Kapell

Much as I like the Argerich/Abbado, I have to say that all the recordings I have (Kissin/Chistyakov, Judd/Lazarev, Argerich/Dutoit Argerich/Abbado, Kapell/Doráti) are very good, the work seems well served on CD, I'll be interested to see what MS Frolova-Walker has to say.

I remember being very excited by Ms. Argerich' re-recording of the work with Dutoit. Alas, perhaps I expected too much since I was slightly disappointed. I MUST re-listen.

So it's Krainev and Kitaenko's earlier Moscow recording that 'won'. Strange that their later Frankfurt recording (the only one listed in the OP) was not even considered. Ah, well, I've ordered the recommended one (along with the other 4 concertos) to add to my two copies of the later one.

Well, I have got the Krainev/Kitaenko Frankfurt recordings (Nos. 1-5) and are more than happy with those.

Agreed. I was prompted to re-listen to Ashkenazy/Previn's recording. Funny how sometimes a little prompt can alert one to listen anew - and 'find' a performance; I now have a real admiration Ashkenazy's rendition, here.

Bryn: where did you order it from? The Riverpeople seem to have only the Frankfurt RSO version listed by AE.

[PS Found it there now - the vagaries of cyrillic transliteration must have been the problem The Amazon.com reviews are interesting, one 5 star, one 1 star which reports pianist, conductor and orchestra as all bad Still, everything else is presumably fine]
