Just listening to Haitink's recording with the Concertgebouw - (Philips 1968) and what a great version it is. Loving the soloists, Elly Ameling (soprano) and Aafje Heynis (contralto) Very much a 'go to' version, this one; Aafje Heynis - what terrific singing!

Haitink gets everything right in all of his recordings but puzzlingly remains under-rated. Must listen to that 1968 recoding again!"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

La Tribune des Disques recently discussed the work, auditioned "blind". You will need very little French to work out the preferences. (I think daring to choose "the best" is unwise; "the recommended version" is a safer line to take).

Whether that early experience of the work coloured my preference for Solti's LSO over his later CSO recording, it remains one of my favourites. The 2007 96/24 remastering "The Originals" version is the one I have recourse to these days. I see there is a new(?) "import" version listed on amazon.co.uk, due for release in June.
