This seems to be RP's 6th Verdi BAL? Forza was his first, the others have been Traviata, Macbeth, Ballo, Falstaff....

Clearly the go-to guy for Verdi, he wrote the essays for all the Verdi operas for my New Grove Book of Operas ed. Sadie (except Oberto, which the book omits, oddly, why not do the lot?).

In spite of an excellent programme I don't think I'll be adding to my HvK/Tebaldi/Bergonzi/Simionat o etc......

I agree that it was an excellent programme - and also that I won't be adding to Solti, Toscanini, Pappano and Serafin/Caniglia. Personally, I find Muti's bloated and rhythmically slack conducting an absolute killer in this opera (as in many others), despite the wonderful cast.

I've listened to this BaL again, and was persuaded to order the Freni/Karajan recording. Under £12 from Amazon.
