Oh dear, what a can of worms...!
    Great post, Tony!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm not sure Elvis recorded K. 622 but it would have been VERY interesting.

          Clarinet or Basset Hound?

If I save up my pension and buy a basset clarinet, what else is there to play on this otherwise fascinating instrument?

I suppose this would be the cheapest option:

Strauss used it in Elektra and other orchestral works (though not - I've just checked - the Alpine Symphony, alas). And there's these:

Yes, but the basset horn and the basset clarinet are not the same.

Darn! You're absolutely right, of course - how careless of me!

I see Joy Farrall's lovely recording in the old Classic FM label can be obtained secondhand for 1p on Amazon - highly recommended by me as is Nicholas Daniel's recording of the Oboe Concerto with which it is coupled .

                        K581? K580a? K498? 'Parto, parto'?

Plus a bit of Sussmayer, but not a great deal more.

I wanted to buy an oboe d'amore to play Bach obligato parts, but decided against it in view of the instrument's very limited use.

And, in modern times, a lot of the pieces that Peter Maxwell Davies (and others) wrote for Alan Hacker were written for his basset clarinet.
