Still lost on me, I'm afraid.
(And I wheeled my bike home yesterday when the chain fell off, so I didn't need a lift in a white van!)

Things evolve, change, over time and we either like the change or not. I happen to like the double-act format as much as the traditional approach, and quite welcome it from time to time. We know that there have been quite a number poor single-handed BaLs down the years (and recent times, too), so format is not the explaining variable.
There have certainly been some poor BaLs over the years but I fail to see how the 2 handed approach would have helped them. At least this week wasn't too disturbed by unnecessary chit chat; it sounded reasonably spontaneous and not too pre-rehearsed.

Indeed, and someone must have been keeping a pretty close eye on the clock to fit in all the excerpts and chat in the time slot available!

I never said that a 2-handed approach would have helped them, that’s a straw-man. The point is that the quality or otherwise of a BaL is not determined by whether there is one, or two people delivering it.

Yes - and one of the most interesting points (the barn dance fiddlers origin of the final squelch) was raised by AMacG rather than ES, who did not seem to be aware of it, and certainly didn't get the significance of it if he was.

I’m looking to the future - 2-handed BaLs, modern vans, downloads ......

A cheap BAL despite the cut Lenny in 1958 enough for me .

Personally I prefer the old vans - more character!

On to Ives, if you decide to go for the earlier Bernstein, and you’re ok with downloads, may I suggest a look at Qobuz who have it for a mere £3.09 c/w symphony #3 and Bernstein's excellent discussion of Ives.

                                http://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/album/ive...021?qref=dac_6
                                Thanks Beefy.
