Well, this set would double the number of recordings of the Christmas Oratorio and St Matthew that I have (JEG in both), if not those of the B Minor (JEG A, Jochum, Parrott) and St John (JEG, and then Britten and Willcocks, both in English), and even though it could have been 9 CDs instead of 10 it's quite tempting (if Caliban is to be trusted ). But given that I don't really listen to the recordings I've already got, I fear that this might be a box I'd have to confess had lain unplayed in a few years' time.

Any comments on the versions of works other than the B minor in this set?

Agreed, though it would be better in post no. 1 (and please stop littering your posts with SHARP SIGNS, unless you are explaining the key of B minor).

There are, of course, no "sharp signs" in Cali's post #40. Sharp signs have pairs of parallel upright vertical lines and parallel diagonals rising upwards intersecting them - "number" (or "pound" in weight) signs - as on the hashtag key, have parallel diagonal uprights inclining towards the right with parallel horizontal lines intersecting them.

          Sharp sign:

                .

... unless of course he was using italic, in the which case this is a sharp key : #

Wouldn't an Italic sharp be "acuto"?

I have often wondered, what with its many sharps, naturals, flats and indeed double flats, Vexations was composed without the employment of double sharps. Perhaps the matrilineally Scottish composer was determined to avoid a potential tautology with the title?

                      This place would

                      without you, ferney!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And interestingly, in that box, you get that lovely vintage HIPP Schmidt-Gaden version of the Christmas Oratorio with all male voices. I hunted it down for ages and found it on a second hand market stand of all places. Plus the two Passions...Ten discs for under £12, that has to be one of the best bargains around.

                              - I'm a little concerned about the speeds; it's the only version of the Christmas Oratorio that uses three CDs - is that DHM's silliness, or is it a more "spacious" performance than others?
