Sorry guys, JEGGERS for me, is my favourite, plus HM Sacred Music Box set version(can't think the version now!) Must get a couple of others I think. I don't think Richard Hickox recorded this work?

I don't think there is a B minor Mass in that HM box, Bbm? (There's a very good Christmas Oratorio conducted by Herreweghe.)

I used to enjoy the JEGgers recording, but it's appealed to me less in recent years. My favourite versions are the Philharmonia/Karajan (for an "old-style", big band performance - beggur all chance of NK chosing that) and the wonderful, wonderful Parrott. (That boy alto is fantastic.)

Incidentally - hasn't the work been "done" fairly recently? I "remember" our discussing the BaL on the BBC Messageboards, which I joined in 2010.

Yes, May 2010 - Parrott 'won' as he had in the 2000 survey. The one before that must have been the JEG/Leonhardt podium finish.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And which HM Sacred Music Box? There is no Mass in b minor in that which I have, though it does have the Missa brevis in F and the Christmas Oratorio.

              From Alpie's list:

Nancy Argenta, Catherine Denley, Mark Tucker, Stephen Varcoe, Collegium Musicum 90, Richard Hickox

Time's Arrow? (said he, inadvertently changing the subject momentarily)...

                    A everyytime, Alpie.

That one I missed the Hickox, the list being very extensive Alpie!

                      I have
                      Herreweghe (Virgin Classics)
                      Bruggen (Philips)
                      Klemperer (EMI)
                      Jochum (Philips)
                      Rifkin (Nonesuch)

This is one of those works where I find it very hard to choose a "better" version (let alone a "best") so I'll be fascinated to hear Sir Nick's thoughts.

Incidentally is it the first time that a "knight", has been the reviewer?

Well, he's done other reviews since being beknighted (the Eroica for one) - but I think you're right that he's the only "Sir" to review recordings

I missed that one. What was it for - turning the Proms into the safe and predictable event they've been more or less ever since his time as director?

I think I probably listen to JEG's Archive recording most often although I also often return to my first love which is the 1968 Harnoncourt. OVPPwise I was a bit disappointed by the Dunedin Consort but I can't remember why, must go back and check that.

What fun if the Pygmalion should win. I love it, and it only needs the one disc.

I found the voices sounded very close-miked when I heard excerpts from it when it came out - which is cheating for a OVPP recording! And totally unnecessary. It put me off buying it.
