By the same token, was the Amadeus S4tet also not "inappropriately name[d]", or the Aeolians, or the Alban Bergs, or the Diotimas, or the Fitzwilliams? An ensemble can call itself whatever it wishes, can it not ... the Lindsays, the Shirleys, the Beverleys, the Kimberleys ... entirely up to them? If they chose to honour somebody who founded a University, in what sense is it "inappropriate"?

Yes, I can see that. I just thought it was a bit weird to the rename themselves "The Lindsays" after leaving Keele, abandoning any reference to the fact that they were a string quartet.

I have the Busch and the Takacs, and it will take something special to convince me I need another.

Me too. The Busch was the door-opener for me, when I picked up the EMI LP box in the Harrods sale (!) in about 1990. The Takacs is the only modern version I've felt the need to have.

Mind you, I admire Stephen Johnson, and miss his regular broadcasts, so I'll be listening closely to this one, and if he recommends another version that might just be the 'something special' that convinces me.

Not in Soviet Russia. You should read Rostislav Dubinsk's book. The State held the franchise on ensemble names. He has an entire chapter devoted to the naming of his Borodin Quartet

"The Croppers" would have subjugated the other three, but the "Cropper String Quartet" did at least let you know what the ensemble was.

My feelings too. But surely no-one can surpass the Busch in, e.g., the rapt inwardness of the slow movement, and they 'know how it goes', as it were, in, e.g., the recitative-like passage in the third movement, where the Belcea (who I find I have as well, mixed in with their Op 18 set) are just awkward.
