I’m keen on Vlad, so I just popped onto Amazon and picked up 4, 5 & 6 for £3.00 incl. p&p, second hand. A veritable bargain!
You'll love 'em. And with Decca's superb recording.... what more could one ask?

I should have typed "4-6" of course - not "3-6"

Yes, Vlad is a top-man in my book and so many of those Decca recordings are of excellent sound quality. Not sure why I’ve overlooked Vlad’s Tchaikovsky (I suppose you can’t have every disc ever released!). Of course it was obvious that you meant 4-6, but it seems to have unsettled Cloughie. Hopefully now you’ve clarified, he’ll be sleeping better and is no longer disturbed!

No not unsettled Beefy, I was hoping perhaps there was a new Polish from Vlad!

That would have put a Sheen on it, with all that rasping Brasso. You’ll just have to dust off your copies of 4-6.

Good spot. But it won’t let me have it for 6.75 Euros (Hi-Res). When I put it in my basket it quotes the Qobuz UK price of £6.59. It should be £5.93.

                  Now, there's a thought!

Vlad's Sibelius is also something special - and excellent Decca technology, as well...

The Decca sound is indeed excellent, but I only bought no. 6 and was devastated by a blatant brass error in the finale.

The Decca sound is also excellent in the Szell, RC played and liked the Scherzo but I didn't hear what ruled it out beyond that, I've loved it since buying the LP in about 1970 and it still sounds very good on CD.

This may not be the place for it, but this thread made me realize that I don't have any Tchaik symphonies on my phone/portable player, so today I downloaded the Jaarvi/Gothenberg set of 1-6, Manfred, and assorted orchestral bits for the princely sum of $5. I had previously heard the Fifth from this set and didn't like it all, but what the heck...I listened to the 4th today while exercising and I liked that a lot more, a sober, unhysterical account and Jaarvi keeps things moving

I was lucky enough to hear Jarvi conduct Tchaikovsky's fourth with the SNO a few times back in the 80's. He could really make it exciting and wasn't averse to pulling the rhythm around to devastating effect.

Interesting I thought that the big 1980s favourite Oslo PO/Jansons did not get a mention unless it was when I made a cup of tea .

It did somewhere near the beginning, but was lumped with about three others (can't remember which now) and dismissed because of a crescendo (or summat) that he didn't like...
