BaL 7.01.17 - Schubert: Fantasie for Violin & Piano in C, D934
I found my Vengerov recording, and a recital by Flott/G Johnson which includes this lovely song, in the tiny classical section of a long-defunct music shop in Haverfordwest. That was the nice thing about old-style independent music shops - the chance to make serendipitous discoveries, as opposed to going online to buy something one knows one wants....
A big hint from Smith's very positive review of Fischer Helmchen is that Busch and Serkin will be her favourite of all . She describes them as being in a different league all together .
I would hope not; it's bound to have been recorded in a cupboard with a rubber band and brown paper - and sound DREADFUL - regardless of the palying.....
To my shame, I didn't know this piece at all. I'm tempted to buy the Faust/Melnikov version, but rather regret that they didn't do it on period instruments...I would love to have heard the work on a fine old Conrad Graf.

Ah, yes - the much missed Swales, perhaps? I discovered it one holiday (in 2003, IIRC) and was delighted to find such a good shop - AND they were having a sale, so I bought lots of stuff. A second visit just two years later, and the place was empty! I'd probably been there during their Closing Down sale. Very sad.
Oh - no: re-reading, I see you describe it as a "tiny" Classical section. Swales' was quite a large part of the shop - sheet Music and CDs.

Oh - it was pleasant enough for an afternoon's shopping. (We had recently just moved to this house after living in Burnley - anywhere after that was an improvement.)

Nor do I have various bits of Schubert violin music normally the Rondo piece but do not know this at all suspect Fischer and Helmchen will be good.
Hiya Barbirollians,
I'd like to know how you rate the account from Fischer and Helmchen when you get to hear it. I have seen Fischer and Helmchen play several times in Germany. They are two of the finest performers of their generation although from what I have seen Helmchen does not seem too well known in the UK.

Indeed. My first taste of it, on the eve of a job interview, was on a wet night in the late '80s - I mooched around the town for an hour or two in the dark, peering in estate agents' windows....not an encouraging start.
Swales it was....memory playing tricks perhaps, I don't remember a huge selection of CDs - but all sorts of sheet music and musical paraphenalia.....

My instinct as to buy it - Fischer's Pentatone recordings are , in my opinion , marvellous and Helmchen is a pianist of great sensibility.
