I got the 10 discs (the 8th is spread over 2) piecemeal, over the years, for rather less than 'list price'. Blomstedt, I think, made fine choices regarding the editions he performed. This with the sole exception of the 8th (his final concert as music director before Chailly took over the job). There he opted for the Haas 'pick and mix'. The booklet notes by Renate Herklotz read somewhat apologetically regarding this choice.

I feel your pain....I'd like to add a good SACD set of Bruckner, as the more I listen to Simone Young, the less enchanted I am with her...

I’ve just downloaded a Hi-Res recording of Skrowaczewski’s LPO B3, a number of months after fellow forumistas urged me to in a recent SS discussion!

I’m tempted to also download the Tennsedt - it sounded very good in this morning’s BaL.

I also bought the Blomstedt set piecemeal in the course of a Proms season a couple of years ago, though the cost was reduced by a kind Forumista offering me a free unwanted copy of the double CD 8th. I can confirm that all of the discs are hybrid SACD and play perfectly on normal CD players. I can't say that the 3rd particularly lodged itself in my memory but I'll play it again as soon as I can.

Wow! That’s an incredible box. I had no idea it existed. Sadly, I have a fair few doubles, including the more interesting ones, so it might not work out for me. It would have certainly been a much cheaper way of acquiring the ones I already have, never mind the extras.

Only just listened via I player. The intention was to listen before messageboarding but it quickly became clear Blomstedt was going to win and so hurried over to the forum. Like many I like neither the obvious early winner nor the come from nowhere get up on the line type!

A good effort from Tom and we weren't reduced to version city as feared. It seemed a slightly shorter BAL if anything.

Often disappointed by Blomstedt, I'm not joining in the scrum to acquire the winner.
Have a feeling I've got the Tennstedt in the garage overflow boxes!

It was very obvious (unless TS was going to do an Agatha Christie, and recommend a completely unexpected recording, like the Ballot) who was going to "win" - every time Blomstedt was mentioned, the tone of his voice lifted into reverential awe.

I really think I am going to sit this BAL out... Didn't listen this morning, don't feel I need TS - either to feature at the start of 2017, or to add to my various B3s

But I'm certainly going to buy the LPO/Skrowaczewski

By the way - does anyone else find themselves listening to BaLs these days with a "subtext" running through their minds on the lines of "Ooh! Cali ain't gonna like that!" or "Barbi's going to need an extra Remipril now"?

Yes, it was quite obvious that he had a preference for the Blomstedt, from the word go. I was most impressed with the Tennstedt and Skowaczewsski LPO and should have bought them long ago (I was advised to, on here!). Having played SS’s performance tonight I thought it was marvellous. But I also listened to the Sinopoli again straight after and think that’s even better!


I also couldn’t resist buying the download of the shortest available recording at under 48 mins - Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Zoltán Fekete (1889 Version, Mono Version). It was only £1.99 for a Hi-Res download from Qobuz.

And like you, I was relieved that TS did not get bogged down about versions. He said what had to be said and then moved on.

I’m not going to get join the scrummage to buy the Blomstedt either (as much as he is a long firm-favourite musician for me). I was also alarmed by ferney’s point about the inaudible trumpet



My first thoughts straight after the BaL .....

It was a tightly argued, well presented BaL. What to include and what to leave out was handled judiciously, IMV.

Editions/versions minefield was dealt with singularly and expeditiously - Well done TS!!
