      Here’s another list:

There was a Dowland BaL in the similar format (i.e. not of one work but of recordings of one composer’s works). Despite the irregularity of the format, it was very much appreciated.

I hope this Strozzi BaL will match the predecessor.

I'm guessing not many of us know thew work of this composer. It should certainly be worth a listen.

Yes, I hope so. It will be hard to bring traditional BAL criteria to bear on such a wide spectrum of pieces. I guess it will be more a case of deciding which performing group best captures the spirit of Strozzi's music on disc. I'm looking forward to it anyway...and hope Ms French manages to fit in quite a lot of examples.

            - I suspect that it will be an expensive one, too!

What a feast! I honestly can’t be bothered about the selection. Hearing all these songs is more than good enough for me. A great introduction to this amazing composer. Very well done Hannah French for this difficult Bal.

A new composer to me, but a familiar sound-world with reminders of Monteverdi particularly, both sacred and operatic. Some wonderful counterpoint and the music never seems to settle for long before slipping into another key. I like the wealth of ideas and drama created by Strozzi. Plenty of examples and splendid performances. A good BAL!

                    - my earlier suspicion proved to be true. Ah, well ... it's only money!

Yes, I was bowled over by the Cappella Mediterranea version. Seeing that CD copies are limited, I have sinned and paid about twenty quid for it, but I really want it in my collection just for one track alone. A lovely BAL and a real discovery for me.

Yes indeed. It could have been a daunting task, but HF wisely chose to play a lot and to 'educate' her audience about this (shamefully?) little-known composer as well indicating her preferred option/s. I don't know if I was shocked or amused at Strozzi's being referred to at the start as 'a singer-songwriter'. After all, she was. But I couldn't help thinking of Beyonce or Taylor Swift! My problem.

                          Me too!

That's one Christmas presented sorted: I'd persuaded Mrs LMP to listen to the programme and she liked Strozzi a lot!

I won't ever listen to it of course
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Cappella Mediterranea seem a most interesting and slightly unusual group. What EM purists think of them I don't know, but there seems almost a cross-over to folk music at times. And a sense of theatre is obviously a big thing for them.

                            Some clips (other than Strozzi)......

I'm ashamed to say I had never heard of the group before the Strozzi programme yesterday. To my ears they seem to share quite a bit in common with Christine Pluhar's group, L'Arpeggiata - and that has to be good!
