Purely out of interest, could we have a rank order?
May I chip in here, please?
    My 'favourite' order is: 5, 3, 2, 6, 4, 9, 8, 7, 1.

I don't think I could do that - I change my mind every day. However, I would agree with no. 5.

(Though of course, only 8 & 9 have numbers.)

Well, that BaL hasn't cost me a penny.

He he, me neither - I got the CFP Handley box some time ago, and very good it is, too.

Very enjoyable and interesting cost-neutral BaL.

For the record, my favourite order is:

            3, 5, 4, 6, 9, 8, 7, 2 .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ................................................ 1

Excellent BAL; model of how to do it, IMO

Easy to praise a BaL which tallies with one's own prejudices (his shortlist would be the three I would choose to save if the house was on fire) but I thought that the presenter was very good: indeed, almost exemplary.

Well, I think you are being harsh on yourself. It can’t be tested, but I think you’d have enjoyed this BaL all the same, even if you preferred different recordings.

I have not had a chance to listen yet but it looks like Boult's recordings did not make the short list. Good to see the Nixa Barbirolli got in as the 'historical' recommendation.

A great BaL, here. Just how they should be. Vernon Handley, a great choice. I be listening to the Haitink, sometime over the weekend.

Well, after today's BaL (and, as with the Elder excerpt some years ago, Record/CD Review has got me wondering why I think I don't enjoy this work - it would be impolite to point out the obvious explanation. Yesterday, I would have said

5, Pastoral, 9, 6, Antartica, "4", London, don't really like 8, and I really, really dislike, in spite of three or four really good moments Sea.

Today, I'm going to make time to listen to the London.

                            - and I think the Pastoral is pretty close.

No - I missed the first five minutes or so, but he did mention later in the programme (in reference to recordings he'd "put to one side") that he'd "already mentioned the later Boult", and said that generally, apart from Handley, those conductors who'd recorded the work twice didn't improve on their earlier performances.

Yes - I agree with the praise for this week's "selector" (Edgey might baulk at his rejection of both Manze and Baskels); interesting that the second Boult (with the Warners logo, the Boult from the blue?) which RVW authority Michael Kennedy so admired thirty-odd years ago was quickly left out of the running. I shall be interested to hear his reasons.
