I couldn't disagree more - to my ears there is nothing the slightest manic about her playing in the Dutoit recording .

I was thinking more of a lot of the later (Lugano) recordings; but nonetheless (I've listened to it again) in the Dutoit recording there's the familiar Argerich tendency to tug and emphasise almost everything, of which I've become tired. Her style now sounds mannered to me. Yes some stunning fingerwork, delicacy etc. - but I personally now want a little more poise, a little more of the music being allowed to speak for itself.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Same here to all the aforementioned. I like the recommended recorded a lot. As Cali said, I am wanting a recording that has more poise, and allowing the music to speak for itself.

I still do not hear any of that- lovely , poetic imaginative and vital playing not a trace of mannerism or self-indulgence to my ears but then again to each their own .

You need Pires for that - so, so elegant

Yes, with her ealier one that SM-P recommended with Dutoit. Not the later one that is listed from Lugano.

In the blue Lugano box from 2010 ? I think that is fabulous . As Gramophone said rarely has the finale been played with such coruscating and riotous brilliance .

                  Yes, fair enough, Barbs.

The Pires is very beautifully played but rather slow as SMP pointed out.
