Interested to hear about the broadcast performance
I always understood that to be an editing mistake on the part of EMI engineers when piecing together takes

Is it worth getting the Barbirolli Society to issue as a CD? I count myself as a keen admirer of JB and his many recordings but the finale of the 5th is exasperatingly slow and loses all momentum as a result.

For me, I always find other versions rushed! Often, I find it an unseemly rush to the finishing line.

I always remember a wise, older friend saying to me 'you may have forgotten your last lover but you NEVER forget your first!'

How very, very true - a lovely quote.

Equally applicable, perhaps to 'your last lover' is 'an unseemly rush to the finishing line.'

I was very taken, with the brief but intense extract of Vaclav Neumann and the German orchestra.... I think it came a little after the Boulez extract, which although pinpoint accurate, did seem to sound over 'intellectualised' - a bit like Shakespeare with perfect enunciation... good, but is that what you want it to sound like?

I have Neumann's recording of the 'Resurrection' with the CPO - and that is rather good - very good, actually.

The first lover may never be forgotten, but if there have been subsequent lovers, there must have been something wrong with it in the first place.

                Yes.

Very sad to hear that the expression "over 'intellectualised'" is thought to mean anything, by the way

AND who "forgets" their lovers, anyway? "Wise"? - "Emotionally retarded wishful-thinking", more like!

A throw-away bit of verbage from me - I could have said something like - "overly analytical," etc, etc... sorry to make you sad!

Neumann recorded Mahler 5 with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1966 and presumably that was the extract played (I didn't hear the programme). I have it on the Philips label. His later recording with the Czech Philharmonic from 1977 is a fine, forthright performance, qualities that are apparent in their Resurrection too. I got both very cheaply on the Supraphon Gem label many years ago and haven't played either for absolutely ages.

Another not discussed but which has given me a great deal of pleasure over the years is the RLPO/Mackerras account .

At noon today, I set off for York and popped the VPO/Bernstein winning CD in the player. Even better than I remembered
                                it, and a worthy winner.
