      HvK still just ahead.

      A riveting BaL so far.

An enormous number of recordings but very few being considered . She clearly does not think much of modern recordings - the recent highly praised Nezet Seguin ,Nelsons and Mackerras not mentioned at all .

Yes - IIRC only one recording made in the last 30 years mentioned in the first half hour (Ashkenazy/Philharmonia - to be dismissed with faint praise).

I have two LP versions by Monteux and the Boston SO. One is mono only, on HMV ALP 1356, the other is in early stereo on RCA SB 2024. I imagine that HMV did not offer the option of stereo, though they must have known it was just about to appear, so when it did Monteux immediately jumped at the chance to make a stereo version with RCA.

I have versions by Karajan and Mravinsky, so it seems I will not have to be off to the shops for any more.

She has mentioned Gatti and Dausgaard but nobody else and I cannot have the winner - the sound is far too boomy and congested. Karajan's DG recording with the BPO is as good and benefits from a much better recording.

I was mightily impressed by the Bernstein excerpt.

Not a library choice but I bought it when it came out and have always enjoyed it when I have given it a spin - it does demand to be heard .

Neck-and-neck - but at the end of the Finale (not illustrated this morning) Karajan's chilling binging-out of the final bass pizzications have a grim nihilism that is unique (and might appeal to your fondness [wrong word, I know] for Shostakovich and Weinberg, Edgey).

                            I enjoyed this programme.
Chikovsky not Tchaikovsky and the presenter should know I suppose.

I have the Karajan versions (all of 'em) but not the ERATO Mravinsky that she chose above the DG recording - I shall hunt that one out. BeefO's enthusiasm for Y N-S (and my experience of his [YN-S's, not Beefo's - 'though I would give good money to hear that!] Schumann set) means that I will have to get that, too.
