The Angeles set has served me very well and over the years I have not felt the urgent need to get other versions. However, I think they are only available as a box, which may count against them as a BaL recommendation.

Though the 2009 Penguin Guide generally rates the Kodaly Naxos recordings of the Haydn string quartets very highly (complete set being given three stars, with some individual discs getting four), their Op 77/1 and 2 disc is only awarded two stars.

Re-listening to the Lindsays. So vibrant. Always loved their Haydn. Fine acoustic.

(Jan 2004, Holy Trinity, Wentworth, Yorks, 'studio' recording.)

I like the Haydn cycle by the Kodalys a lot , but their playing in his particular quartet is for me a bit underpowered and stately.

Amadeus more expressive than the Kodaly's in this quartet, but lacking the vivacity of the Lindsays.

                    I'm ready!

A near perfect combo of specifics and overview, facts and feelings.

Rarely has a winner been so well argued.

Maybe not the easiest voice on the ear to but that simplify invites another listen.

Generally agreed with her conclusions and explanations (except I would have ridiculed the 'Festetics' acoustic slightly more - not just a bathroom acoustic, but in the bathroom upstairs and down the end of the corridor....). Not sure I'd be quite as complimentary, though, Alison. I do find Ms Gill one of the worst offenders for skating through phrases at barely intelligible speed - I was listening in perfect conditions and still had to piece together sentences in my brain by supplying some of the last syllables she swallowed as she tore to the next full stop. Also it occurred to me that there's sometimes a bit too much 'me' 'my' and 'I' but perhaps she's just being honest about it being a subjective judgement and not about laying down any absolutes.

Don't get me wrong though - sensible and thorough. And I think I need to get serious about Haydn quartets. I only have three Kodaly Quartet CDs (not including Op 77 which I didn't know at all).
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I saw the Quatuor Mosaïques box set available on Amazon for £18 in 2013 and ummed and ahhed, then the price went up to £50 - it's currently £33.
