Also v good to hear that appalling Karajan soloist called 'Shocking, by any standards'... Because it certainly was.
Quite shocking. But it was the same Wilma Lipp who sang that F major arpeggio in The Queen of the Night's aria so cleanly and accurately...not a scoop or a swoop in sight. Probably wrong person at the wrong time.

PS: Ferney got there first, as usual!
Did that, and it is definitely NOT attributed, so it's anyone's guess...

(You watch - it'll turn out to have been from Butt's recording, and I'll look a fool).
Well on this occasion at least, I've got away with it!

Had a reply from the RR producer this morning, to say that the introductory extract which wasn't announced was from the Peter Schreier/Dresden Staatskapelle/Philips recording.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

A "reply from the producer"? Almost a candidate for the "Things Time Forgot" Thread!

          (The "reply", not the "producer".)

As it 'appens, I have found that an email to a contact address for a |Radio 3 programme often results in a reply from a producer.

I can confirm that. And a word of praise for their efforts is also appreciated
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Many thanks - I have that recording due for a spin later today, I feel.

I responded with suitable compliments about RR

Peter Schreier/Dresden Staatskapelle/Philips - and with Margaret Price -perfect (a wonderful singer). I'm completely happy with Mozart/Sussmayer, and this recording.

Hello, Caliban. A couple of years ago I contacted CD Review (as it was then) about an issue relevant to this thread. I had noticed that when BAL was on a piece of music with a very large number of recordings the presenter (or Andrew McGregor) said they had only listened to a fraction of them. The reply was that this was indeed the case. And it happened with the Mozart Requiem. Nicholas Kenyon said he had listened to about 50 recordings - but EA in his wonderful list gives about 100 different versions!

I have 2 versions, one of which is the Schreier. I'm not in the market for another.

I came across this one years ago - I quite like it, actually...... B000025LG3 with the 'river lot'

The Schreier has been my favourite for years and Margaret Price's singing alone would keep it there.

I too have the Schreier (and the Karajan and Bruno Walter). IIRC it was a free gift along with other CDs at the Gramophone awards at the Barbican in days when they invited subscribers! My main memory was the LSO playing and Marin Alsop's electric conducting. Was anyone else on the forum there?
