But Die Zauberflote isn't an Opera.

What I do, with opera,(which unfortunately listen quite rarely), is that I follow the libretto and with the action taking place, I have in my mind what's going on. I love using my imagination!

You often get better pictures this way
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Oh yes me too. You don't get any of those daft 'high concept' productions... and it's much less expensive ! I think the phrase is "win-win"

Well, on the one hand, I'm certainly looking forward to this BaL, but I'm already suffering trauma in anticipation of it being a live duet.

I just want Andrew McGregor to keep saying 'Gaylord' as he did just now.

What an interesting BAL. It was a pleasure to have Mr Seckerson's love of the music informing the musical excerpts from this marvellous work and the discussion with Andrew was very engaging.
High time R3 brought back Mr Seckerson's excellent Stage and Screen programme or a vehicle that give us the chance to share his exploration of musical theatre, I owe a number of musical discoveries to him which I doubt that I would ever have found for myself.

I think this was an occasion when the studio discussion enhanced the extracts played. I agree that it's not a format that works for most 'through composed' works but, here, it was fine.

Good stuff, and a good education from what I heard.

Agree with all that. Interesting to hear. Do I want to buy a copy of the piece? Not really.

I don't think whether or not it's "through-composed" makes any difference. Die Zauberflöte isn't through-composed either. Unnecessary interruptions are unnecessary interruptions, watever the musical format. The point today was that A.McG was less eager to interrupt, so was not so annoying.

I was agreeably surprised that I really enjoyed learning about Showboat. I only knew a few of the numbers...the standards, if you like. The transition between operetta and full-blown musical show was fascinating, as were its various reincarnations. I grudgingly admit that I found the chat format less disagreeable than usual...partlyfor the reason Alpie suggests, but partly because ES was so obviously 'in charge'.

                              Was there a DVD recommendation?
