BaL 23.01.16 - Debussy: Trois Nocturnes

Only just caught up with this BAL which I found an absorbing listen.
On the shelves I find I have Dutoit and RF de Burgos, in CD form, neither of which got a mention I thinkand I also have a few 'first two only' recordings - the Fürtwangler mentioned by anton, and (in download form) Cantelli and my favourite, Monteux.
Personally, I'm happy with only the first two nocturnes. Old Claude-Achille isn't central to my musical existence (sorry HighlandD! mais... 18 versions?! T'es sérieux???)... and I confess that, in general, I give 'wordless choruses' a very wide berth, so to be honest can do without the third nocturne.
Just listening to the Abbado/Berlin on iTunes music - Nuages is seductive, more so than Monteux... But I do find Fêtes a bit too splashy and 'big band / soft focus' ... The LSO with Monteux have this movement to perfection, for me. And listening again to Sirènes - yup, I can take 'em or leave 'em
Now the recording that really caught my ear in this BAL was Paray/Detroit, as advocated above by richardfinegold. And so thanks to the wonders of iTunes Music, that is playing now as I type. Fantastic.
Anyway - I shan't be buying any others, I don't think. If I need these pieces on the move, I have Monteux; and at home, they're all available anyway!"...the isle is full of noises,

A very interesting Sirenes, too.
I think I might be about to enter into a hardcore 'Paray/Detroit Symphony' phase. It's just exactly as I like my French orchestral music played and recorded.
Richardfinegold, feel free to join in the fan frenzy!!(I remember we spoke about this combo when we had supper in London, and your enthusiasm - better late than never for me!)
But there's an oddity. On my 'iTunes Music' page for this music, we appear from the content to be listening to this album:
However, the iTunes illustration is of a different album, and bears no relation to the pieces:
And that latter album, I can't find on iTunes Music, can you Beefy? I'd love to listen to the Paray/Detroit 'Mother Goose Suite'...."...the isle is full of noises,

The Mercury CDs are very hard to find now, but if you want to hear why Wilma Cozart, Robert Fine, Harold Lawrence, Dennis Drake went to all that trouble - restoring the Westrex, the Ampex, matching the equalization curve exactly before mastering the CDs..... THIS will tell you why -
Listen to unlimited or download Ravel - Debussy by Paul Paray in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.
....you see, it's partly because of low-rate streaming that the CDs are either unavailable or highly-priced and prized... so come on, it isn't much to pay to hear why "beauty is truth, truth beauty..."
Thank GOD for lossless and hi-res downloads - and the people like Qobuz who care enough to make them available...
Lots of Paray goodies here http://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/search?q=...ray&i=boutique, and some in 24-bit for a pittance, though the sources for the BnF transfers remain obscure...! (quality seems (very) variable - Bizet Suites say 24-bit Stereo but they're... mono- but Beethoven 1&2 highly recommended...stick to the Mercurys unless you like to gamble...).
....a lot of the French rep in one go, save the Debussy....http://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/album/pau...894756268#item
...of which the Ravel, Chausson and extraordinary (stereo!) Bizet suites are the true unmissables....Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 01-02-16, 02:09.

I tend to use streaming to work out what I really want; then get the download if possible.

Afterthought: I wonder what their Schumann Symphonies are like! Do you know those recordings?"...the isle is full of noises,

Yes.. Ma Mere l'oye often gets missed, catalogued under... Debussy...
Debussy: La Mer, Iberia & Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. Mercury Living Presence: 4343432. Buy Presto CD online. Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Paul Paray
Strange it's not in the Mercury 5-album collection though.
Another one of the very best not in the French Collection....!
Listen to Paul Paray in unlimited on Qobuz and buy the albums in Hi-Res 24-Bit for an unequalled sound quality. Subscription from £10.83/month
The Roussel is in-your-room physically, & musically stunning as well!Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 01-02-16, 02:22.

I'm a bit of a Chabrier fan, so that second disc you cite is a distinct temptation, too..... (Presto lossless download available!)....
And any thoughts on the Schumann symphonies?"...the isle is full of noises,

I've had the Paray collections in my possession for many years, so I didn't realize that they have gotten somewhat difficult to obtain. I most recently reacquired them when I bought the big Mercury reissue boxes, after owning them in previous CD
And lp incarnations. The big box collection appears to be the the only way to purchase them on disc at the moment
