Now THAT is a first violin section...

After (the rather interminable) BaL this week, AMcG did confirm that the next one was to be Sib. 1.

There also seems to be a live 1953 Stokowski Sibelius 1 on Guild, from Helsinki.

Looking forward to this BaL! I wonder how Ashkenazy will fair?

So am I. Ashkenazy should (if there is any justice in this world) fair very well. There are many ways of speaking Sibelius's 'language' - it's perhaps a question of whose 'accent' one prefers......

Ah - but which version by Ashkenazy? (Any opinions on the more recent recording?)

He recorded it again? I have his Decca 1984 with the Philharmonia...... I find this a most rewarding set - not just the 1st symphony.

Yup - third on Alpie's list:

... somewhat pricey! (The boxed set of the earlier complete Symphonies costs less than this one CD!)

I got to know the Sibelius symphonies from 3-7 through the Ashkenazy recordings but did not have his First - that was Barbirolli on an EMI Eminence reissue or his Second which I first owned with the BSO/Davis recording . I have enjoyed making their acquaintance in the recently issued box . The standout recording for me of the Ashkenazy set was the coupling of the Seventh and Tapiola .

Interesting. My first cycle was Davis/Boston. VA was my first cycle on CD and the best recordings in the lot were the First and the coupling of 7 and Tapiola. My next digital cycle was Vanska/Lahti and for years that ruled the roost on my shelves, until I bought the Barbirolli Halle cycle at a second hand shop

Great to hear such enthusiasm for the SNO under Gibson!
