This wonderful account takes some beating: Genia Kuhmeier, Christa Mayer, Timothy Robinson, Oliver Ringelhahn, Matthew Rose, Staatsopernchor Dresden, Staatskapelle Dresden/Sir Charles Mackerras, recorded at Frauenkirche Dresden on Carus

I agree with you - it is a wonderful account of a piece I love. There are several others in this list that I'm very happy to have on the shelves, including Bernius and Kubelik on CD and Böhm on DVD. Looking forward to hearing this BAL.

For me also a great recording.
One other which I like very much is the Swawallsch one, from his 1980s complete sacred music set.

Hmm. Looks like the Weil had fallen out of the catalogue, but if anyone fancies young voices and the OAE in this work, there is a "Used - Very Good" copy available via amazon.co.uk for £1.50 including p&p:

Neither this single CD or the multi-CD complete-masses-set seem to be in the catalogue, by the view of it.

Indeed. I have the 4 disc set, so was happy to alert others to the low cost option, rather than grabbing it for myself. I do not think it would have been in the running, even if it was currently in the catalogue. The boy soloists are not to everyone's taste, and the recording leave something to be desired. However, a Weil directed performance is always worth a hearing, in my opinion.

When I was looking for a Schubert Mass set a few years ago, I got it down to Sawallisch and Weil. I ended up going for the good value 11 CD Sawallisch EMI Choral box which I am very happy with. The Weil box on Vivarte is still there on Amazon.

The last time this was the subject of BAL was 7 October 1995 when Richard Wigmore recommended Bruno Weil. And his second choice was Sawallisch!

Am I wrong to be slightly surprised that this work merits a second bite at the BAL cherry? I imagine that there are many at least equally-'deserving' pieces that have never had so much as a nibble...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes - in twenty years, there are other cherries added to the bag. It's a great work, much undervalued and needs "bumping"

Not a piece I know (not my period!).
I assume that there is a tenor duet that warrants having two soloists?
Perhaps costly therefore for choral societies to perform?

I heard AMcG say it was a live BaL.
Hope he lets the reviewer have his say too.

Yes, I find he does interrupt rather.

I see that |I might have to buy three recordings here. The two Abbado's and the Hickox, but I will wait for the out come!
