You're just adding to the confusion. The customer reviews on that page seem to relate to Fricsay's not Giulini's Verdi Requiem. All very strange.

The customer reviews for the Solti Chicago recording are also all about the Fricsay! (I was hoping Bbm would concentrate on the pictures.)

Hmmm seemed to have stirred up something unbeknown to me( as usual! :) )

I thought it was clear enough what I said, ah well. it provided a laugh so that's always good9at my expense! :))

I bought the DG set of the Verdi req with Giulini conducting. Then I assumed that it would be the EMI recording was the preferred version? So I may get that too! :)

Well, IMO, the Pappano sounds cosily corporate. No frightened horses here.
The Solti / Sutherland / a youngish Pavarotti etc recording, whatever its shortcomings may be is electrifying. Yes, treated as opera, but four top class - many would say the very toppest class - operatic singers at the very top of their game, knew each other well, toured as a team with it, and with an orchestra that has opera in its blood. I was amazed listening back that it barely even merited a mention.

Hello, everyone, I have been absent for a while and I am linking in here to agree with this and say that I thought this particular BAL was an absolute disgrace. Not just the earlier Solti (which I love and is far better than his later one) but Fricsay, Reiner, Abbado, Gergiev (OK, the tenor isn't that bad), Markevich, Giulini's on BBC Legends, and, I suppose I will be forgiven for mentioning, Lopez-Cobos (one of mine on the LPO label, which at least one reviewer has placed very high up in the canon!)! All these performances and others I cannot think of (at this legal conference in which I sit rather bored!) which have serious claims to consideration as being of highest quality not even mentioned. The whole thing sounded a cheap set up to bring the Pappano setting everyone's notice with suitable alternatives there to knock down.

Interesting to read Alan Blyth's review of the later Solti in Gramophone - he thought it vastly preferable to the VPO Solti and was particularly hard on Sutherland for interpretative misjudgments( though he had good words for Horne and Pavarotti) - raved about Janet Baker in the later CSO one - which has prompted me to order it despite it not being my favourite work .

Listening to it now - Dame Janet sings wonderfully and Leontyne Price is not bad either !

The CSO/Solti is a winner and Dame Janet and Price especially . I rather like the chorus not being too Italianate . Somehow a more understated performance has converted me for all Pappano's sensational excitement and passion - perhaps all a bit too much for an agnostic .

I have the Solti/Sutherland. Is the CSO version that much better? Worth forking out for despite afew critical doubts about Price?

It's less than a fiver including P&P - even if you prefer the VPO, you won't regret having it in your collection. (And Baker is superb - as is Price; I was surprised to hear such criticism on the programme.)
