As for the winner I’m reminded again of Robert Layton’s old adage:
’one is too aware of an interpreter at work’. Maybe ‘Bill’ was overly influenced by the sleeve notes! For me not a version to return to very often.
I think you are right - he started on bout Thielemann without actually naming the recording as if Andrew McGregor was reading his notes for him.

My thought exactly. It doesn't actually say anything! In fact, I thought the review was rather disjointed (as it now so often is) and I insist it is due to the wretched format.
Just let the reviewer do their job, for heaven's sake!

Yes, it is all due to the wretched format.

Some reviewers can overcome the wretchedness of the format - I think of makropoulos, Gillian Moore and Joanna McGregor for example - others do not - big time.

And some just carry on as if AMG is not there; I’m thinking of the likes of Richard Wigmore and Nicholas Kenyon. But all you say is true. I think the three you instance all handle it with remarkable tact.

I have found the 2014 BAL just by searching for it . It is still available on that page from Stephen Johnson . An eminent Bruckner scholar albeit one with whom I sometimes disagree ( especially about HVK in Bruckner) with extracts from Bohm, Haitink LSO, BPO/Wand , HVK, Furtwangler , Tennstedt, Harnoncourt, Jochum DG, Blomstedt/Dresden ,Klemperer/Philharmonia.Young 1874 and Celi. Still no Bruno Walter though which is a black mark.

It's in a completely different league to last Saturday's shallow affair but completely accessible.

              Berlin Philharmonic /Gunter Wand won.

Tennstedt would have been on my shortlist.

Mine too, Alison. There are, I think, three Bruckner 4s from him: LPO, BPO and Concertgebouw.

He was on SJ’s with Wand and Haitink.
