My particular problem is that once the Bizet CD is put in the player, it whirrs bizarrely then the display tells me that it is
'not known'. The disc doesn't even launch.

Just a thought: I wonder if the disc is a copy burnt from a download? If the disc is not fully Phillips Red Book CD then older players may not recognise it. Computer disc drives are more tolerant and will play almost anything in my experience.

            It's a venerable Volvo.

No, Jonfan, it's an original disc from Naive.

Yes, indeed it was the ‘Record of the Week’ immediately after this BAL - F-XR credited comme si de rien n’était

The Minkowski Arlésienne issue also completely passed me by on its release - I don’t recognise the cover art at all - and as this is probably my favourite music by Bizet, I’m looking forward to having a listen (and also to the Barcelona/Gonzalez performance). Useful BAL

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oooh, the cover art is one of the famous Van Gogh paintings of the garrigue near St Rémy, I fancy.

I've got many hundreds (poss. thousands) of cassettes, some from before 1983, and plenty have failed to play on my ancient Marantz RS-BX606 Tape Deck.
Cases of tape stretching, mangling and squealing have been met with curses and a rapid OFF button (bit like R3, esp. in the morning).

Oh yes, I recognise the painting… I just don’t recall its use on the album, which is strange as I run my eye over new releases most weeks.

Ah, sorry, I see what you mean. It was the same for me, I only became aware of its existence thanks to this thread. It is the most beautifully produced album.
