I've got many hundreds of CDs, some from 1985, and not one has ever failed to play on my slightly ancient Technics SL-PG5 player. Any rare cases of jumping or sticking has been instantly cured by using my decades old HMV CD Lens Cleaner.
I've got many hundreds (thousands) of CDs, some from 1984, and not one has ever failed to play on my ancient Marantz 5001 player.

My particular problem is that once the Bizet CD is put in the player, it whirrs bizarrely then the display tells me that it is
'not known'. The disc doesn't even launch.

Just a thought: I wonder if the disc is a copy burnt from a download? If the disc is not fully Phillips Red Book CD then older players may not recognise it. Computer disc drives are more tolerant and will play almost anything in my experience.

…F-X R has been airbrushed out of existence on their website (I think), although I noticed a new recording of Stravinsky's Le Rossignol featuring him with the orchestra is about to be released by Erato.
Yes, indeed it was the ‘Record of the Week’ immediately after this BAL - F-XR credited comme si de rien n’était…
The Minkowski Arlésienne issue also completely passed me by on its release - I don’t recognise the cover art at all - and as this is probably my favourite music by Bizet, I’m looking forward to having a listen (and also to the Barcelona/Gonzalez performance). Useful BAL

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
