... likewise : thank you Sir Velo. And I got it for a fiver, probably more now

Having listened through the Minkovski I must admit to being disappointed after approaching it with high hopes, The acoustic was quite dry and exposed the slightest ensemble and intonation problems. The Ulster Orchestra is my choice, with superb Chandos engineering always a clincher!

The only snag for me is that the Minkowski disc refuses to play on my main CD player - on the computer, no problem. Annoying when that happens.

There was a reviewer on Amazon who was bitterly disappointed with the sound. I streamed it on Apple and was also taken aback by the dry and cramped acoustic . I also didn’t care for the lack of color in the strings. An interesting one off but probably not for replay.
I am curious as to why the CD wouldn’t play for Mickey

Me too! It's a good Yamaha player but it steadfastly refuses to play the disc ...put it in a cheap CD player in my computer and it works just fine!
Yes, a pity about the dry acoustic, something of which I am never fond.

I assume that you cleaned the disc? Even newly purchased ones can have embedded dust, or your accidental finger prints as you loaded it into the player. Some machines are more finicky than others

I don't have this disc but there are a few in my collection that play only on a cheap CD player or computer - Vienna Fin de Siecle with Barbara Hannigan on the usually dependable Alpha label for one.

Infuriating isn't it? I often wonder if it's to do with the extra artwork applied to the disc rather than just using traditional labelling. Yet how can cheap players still deal with it ?

These last few postings are making an inveterate streamer feel smug!

Well, I have to say that this is the first CD in ages that has failed on my machine. But yes, it happens!

I've got many hundreds of CDs, some from 1985, and not one has ever failed to play on my slightly ancient Technics SL-PG5 player. Any rare cases of jumping or sticking have been instantly cured by using my decades old HMV CD Lens Cleaner.

I’ve had enough IT issues through the years with streaming that that made me decide to stop tossing CDs after ripping them.
Cheaper CD players are more likely to be less finicky about disc quality than more costly units because the latter have various error rejection software

Oddly, enough I have found the opposite - the CD player in my car is much stroppier than my main system.

Not had any issues with streaming, and more than happy with the hi res quality from Qobuz, to say nothing of the huge online catalogue. Still, like RFG, I've taken a belt and braces approach, not only retaining all my old CDs, but ripping them to disc, backing up to expansion drives and to at least two cloud servers. That way hopefully I'm reasonably futureproof!
