BaL 19.09.15 - Beethoven: Symphony no. 4 in B flat
A BaL that I'm quite looking forward to.... I reckon Klemperer takes some beating, but clearly won't even get more than a passing mention. Something more recent will surely take the laurels.....

??? Why do you say this, visnick? It's Rob Cowan presenting the review ... he likes that sort of thing, even if I doubt he'll give it the ultimate accolade.

Even if Klemperer (who I likewise think unlikely to make the shortlist), which of the available recordings?
Nobody's mentioned Weil, I think. He, Lamon and co. give a spirited performance I much admire, though the recording does not catch as much detail as I would like.
Must listen to the Antonini again. It got a real pasting in The Gramophone, which gave such a rave review to the 'Eroica' with which it is paired on the disc.

I hadn't checked who the reviewer was; Rob Cowan certainly does 'like that sort of thing' (as indeed, do I) but just as a very general observation, the recommendations are often somewhat surprising. I know that is perhaps overstating and oversimplifying the issue, but you get my point.....

Oh, yes. But it would be somewhat surprising to recommend a version recorded over fifty years ago as "the best".

I was travelling back from Cornwall at the time and I had to switch off as wanted to pay more attention to directions, at a critical point, so I did not see who won the accolade this time? Did Abbado get a mention?
Don’t cry for me
I go where music was born
J S Bach 1685-1750
David Zinman 'won' first prize with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra albeit with a caveat about 'extra twiddles' from the wind. I don't remember Abbado getting a mention but Karajan's 1962 recording was given a mention. Thielleman's version was slated! No wonder I got his set in a charity shop for a fiver a month after they were released!

Most likely, PG. Harnoncourt's cycle usually gets a good recomendation, like, his recording of the 7th symphony, iirc?

Zinman is an excellent choice, one of my longterm favourites & a great refresher for anyone who doesn't do HIPPs...
Just after it was released, one local listener who often sought my advice bought it and.... took it back to HMV in a huff two days later, having exchanged it for... the 1955 Klemperer 3rd on GROC.
He said the tempi in the Eroica on the Zinman CD made him giddy. I don't think he ever heard the 4th...

I've really enjoyed the Zinman symphony/concerto recordings. Frankly, I could do without the twiddles which are fine in a live performance but become predictable on repeated hearings but that's a small price to pay for a superb approach to Beethoven. IMHO!

I recall comments like pastoral's fifty years ago in Handel! If future research continues to support decoration in Beethoven, all those performances without will start to sound naked - like Beecham and others in the aforesaid Handel.
