judging by his very soupy Beethoven concerto it wouldn’t be Charlie Siem!

Well doesn’t the program now limit the choice to relatively recent recordings? I don’t know any, actually, the most recent on my shelves being Julia Fisher with Kreizberg on Pentatone and that recording is approaching 20 years in age. My latest discovery was Krebbers with Haitink and it’s from the seventies. My personal favorite here is Kogan with Monteux, followed by Oistrakh/Klemperer

Apart from the two BBC MM offerings (PG: did you see my post about availability of the Ida Haendel one?), the Krebbers is one of three versions on my shelves, the others being Tasmin Little/RLPO/Handley (which I was pleased to see mentioned elsewhere) and the classic Ginette Neveu/Philharmonia/Dobrowen.

If you call Gilels/Szell Beethoven PC 1, last week's choice, 'relatively recent'!

I suspect DON’s choice might be as left field as Joseph Cooper’s choice when asked to do the Emperor.

Last covered by BaL in April 07 when Robert Philip chose Gil Shaham/BPO/Abbado.

This is one of those pieces which used to be considered essential but seems to have fallen out of favour somewhat. Prior to 2007, it was covered by BaL in 1958 (presented by Neville Marriner!), 1968, 1971, 1975 and 1982.

Given that the presenter is the wacky DON, I can't say I'm looking forward to this programme...

No, it’s good to see a moldy old from the sixties in there, but Gilles/Szell wouldn’t have been my choice

I recall "the wacky DON" at some point saying he wasn't a Brahms fan. If that was and/or still is the case, what's he doing choosing a Brahms VC for BAL?

If I was being unkind, I might comment that the only person of whom DON might be a "fan" is, of course, himself. I seem to remember that there is some shtick about people in the gondola of a balloon which needs to lighten its load so who would be the first to be unceremoniously jettisoned. I fancy a three-way among DON, Tom Service and the omniscient gnome aka Hurwitz. Choices, choices ...

I might just give BaL a miss this afternoon.

If you do, remember that you can always catch it on Sounds, as no doubt we'll be told.

Norris has done Brahms on BaL before, a characteristically outsider-choice of artist for some of the late Klavierstucke. I'm always tickled by the rubric 'chooses his favourite version'. Not the best, not the best bargain, just his own favourite. Am I bovvered?

Loving the concept of doodling with a set square.
Actually learning a fair bit too: the 5 into 3 feature, for example.

So much wonderful playing so far how do you begin to choose ?
I think I’d give anything to be able to play and experience that heart stopping post first movement cadenza soaring violin phrase tune . A moment in music where time stands still and how beautifully Norris’ choice played it.

First time in ages I've listened to BaL and loved Norris's characteristic style: I know the 'twofer' is widely disliked here, but I thought he and AMcG really sparked off each other - perhaps partly because A is a violinist. And yes, I learned a lot too, such as when Brahms grew his beard.

That 'beard' bit perhaps picked up by DON, with an ironic twinkle, from the last Brahms BAL. I always enjoy and learn from him, even if his 'choice' often seems not to 'fit', somehow.
I have the Mutter/Karajan, but would like to follow up the 'Nige' and the live one with Bernstein, and some of the others.
