BaL 18.01.25 - Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy overture)

Have just listened to Boult's 1959 Tchaik 6. What a blistering performance! Exciting and at times quite moving, with the LPO playing their socks off!

The original Gramophone reviewer much preferred Boult’s handling of the last two movements to the first two.

I am very taken with Abbado’s 1974 VPO Pathetique coupled with that Boston SO R and J.

I was out of town and returned last night. I have that disc, acquired for the Symphony, and I couldn’t disagree more with the choice. It probably sounds better in SACD than the stereo layer, judging by the comments here, and the multichannel adds some hall resonance, but for me it’s a lukewarm bowl of goulash

Well, on Qobuz (24/192), with the volume turned up a little more than usual, it sounds fine to me, if not exactly stellar. Maybe it's the contrast with the (really very good for 1972) Ole Schmidt Nielsen but it's a good illustration of how recording technology has advanced in the last forty years. The sub-woofer is enjoying the exercise. I've just sourced a cheap copy of the SACD from Germany so will enjoy listening to the 5-Channel version when back in Scotland.
