Dug out the Blu Ray of Slatkin/Detroit. It has 5 Dance Numbers. I haven’t listened to it yet, but probably faulty memory led me to believe that some of the Dance Elisha’s padding that isn’t in the Bernstein recording (and others).

and after listening to it there is definitely material, particularly in Hoe Down , that isn’t in the other recordings that I know. It’s utterly forgettable stuff

We still might, though I go for the composer himself.

Wikipedia claims that Ranch House Party was 'written by Leonard Bernstein on behalf of an overworked Copland'. Is that why it is omitted (even by Bernstein himself) in the commonly recorded Four Dance Episodes? They also say:

'Copland arranged the music as a symphonic suite for orchestra titled Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, which consisted chiefly of removing "Ranch House Party" and minor adjustments to the final two sections. With the middle section removed, the composition resembled the symphonic form with an ambitious opening movement, slow movement, minuet and finale.'

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

Michael Tilson Thomas is the pick, John Wilson 'highly recommended' with the best sound, Bernstein's 'high octane' performance the other runner up, but perhaps a bit too exciting for Ben Gernon (personally I think Lenny's 'orchestral showpiece' approach worked really well here).

                    Thanks.
Just about to catch up on Sounds (a friend was here for a late lunch, breaking his journey from Northumberland to Oxfordshire).

Morton Gould in "Living Stereo" is good enough for me. Was he even mentioned? ...

A good episode, I thought: nice long extracts for once, with the strengths and weaknesses of each clearly pointed out and discussed.
And SW's interactions were considered and thoughtful, not remotely as annoying as Andrew Mac's can often be.

Was this the smallest number of played versions ever for a BaL? I made it Copland, Lenny, MTT and a single excerpt from Schwarz. Have I missed any?

Of course, I meant to include Wilson. But four taken seriously, and one - Schwarz - dismissed instantly.

Incidentally, the recording of Appalachian Spring on the MTT CD was Geoffrey Smith's first choice in November 2000.
