    Lots of listening recently here:

    Detroit/Dorati
    Minneapolis/Dorati
    LSO/Copland
    NYPO/Bernstein
    SFSO/MMT

    and (supposedly full ballet)
    Detroit/Slatkin

Copland: Rodeo. Naxos: 8559758. Buy CD or download online. Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin

I'm a little confused by rfg's decription, as this Naxos recording contains a whole other movement, Ranch House Party, which I'd hardly call connective tissues (his medical training coming to the fore).

Of the others, Detroit wins over Minneapolis, but Copland himself for me reigns supreme (admittefly the only one I listened to with headphones).
Bernstein far too hurried/rushed in comparison, I felt.

At least it’s not Ed Seckerson doing this one.

No, but we'll probably end up with Bernstein anyway. Nothing wrong with that though.

... ah, but if it were Seckerson doing it, we would have ended up with Lenny ...

Very strange Pulc - I have the recording in the Naxos 30th Anniversary box. Clearly states on the cover that all five movements, including 3 Ranch House Party. However playing the disc only 4 movements are there. Presto downloads of the disc include RHP - the track can be downloaded individually for 87p - which I have duly done and burned a CDR of the now completed disc!
Regular streamers I guess will have no problem accessing the full work!
Just checked and it is there on Spotify!

Do you have the Blu Ray Audio version or the CD? They might vary in content. I will have to dig up the disc

I streamed the offering on Deezer, which just showed 5 tracks.

Yes but the disc does not include Ranch House Party but the download does! There are only 5 tracks for the work but only 4 on the CD. This may have been an error in the manufacture and this may have been corrected for later issues.

Just streamed again, and I think there is indeed some of rfg's 'connective tissue' in the final movement.
But that doesn't explain the Naxos issue anomalies.

Ah Pulc - The plot thickens - checking timings on Presto the straight 4 movt versions come out around 18-20 minutes - Ttye 5 movts around 24-25 mins eg DetSO Slatkin and ColoradoSO Litton OK so far! However the BaltimoreSO Zinman has 4 movts at 25+ BUT the 2nd movt listed as Corral Nocturne lasts 7.24 and does include the Ranch House Party. The StLSO Slatkin runs 22.56 and track 3 is Piano Interlude & Saturday Night Waltz. Morton Gould has a shorter 3rd movt called Honky Tonk Interlude.

I thought that the honky-tonk featured in Billy the Kid (it does); but it is indeed also in the Ranch House Party section of Rodeo (extract from the Presto site):

The Colorado Symphony is obviously enjoying itself in this all-American programme, as is its conductor Andrew Litton, who joins the revelry as honky-tonk pianist in the Celebration section of Billy the Kid and the Ranch House Party in Rodeo, before bringing the disc to a rollicking end in that ballet’s closing section, Hoe-Down.

The BIS SACD of Andrew Litton and the Colorado SO is so well recorded - and played - that I would happily dispense with every other version.

I think I've decided that it's LSO/Copland Four Dance Episodes for me.
If it was good enough for the composer, then it's good enough for me.
