BaL 7.12.24 - JS Bach: Concerto for flute, violin, and harpsichord (BWV1044)

Simon Heighs' recommendation for one of Bach's least-performed, but most delightful multi-instrument concertos: the concerto for flute, violin, and harpsichord.

And that's all it says. I've even edited it to avoid duplication.

    Presto listing here:

    Recommended version:
    Richard Egarr (harpsichord)
    Rachel Brown (flute)
    The Academy of Ancient Music
    Andrew Manze (conductor)
    Harmonia Mundi HMU907283/84

This has often been a Cinderalla, because it's not part of a set. I've not heard anthing to beat Menuhin, Bennett and Malcolm on HMV or Dart, Jones and Adeney on Oiseau-Lyre.

An interesting choice of a much neglected work. I have to confess it's never been one of my favourites, but Reinhard Goebel's and Richard Egarr's versions are in my collection and I like them both.

I don't know the Richard Egarr, but do have the Trevor Pinnock / Simon Standage / Lisa Beznosiuk (1984), and Reinhard Goebel.

For photographic style, can any version beat Trevor Pinnock + Simons Preston & Standage? I do like those old LP sleeve notes/photos, sadly, often not transferred to CD.

Oh my goodness, don't they look young? I was going to all their concerts in London at the time. This recording eluded me, I see it's still available on cd.

It’s a cracker and the coupling with the late David Reichenberg and Simon Standage in the violin and oboe and oboe d‘amore concertos was still on a full price CD for many years . It’s one of my desert island discs .

PS they look like they were in the 1970s not 1984 !

Surprised to discover five recording in my collection:

Zuzana Ružicková, Josef Suk, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Prague Soloists cond Eduard Fischer,1968
Gustav Leonhard, Frans Brüggen, Marie Leonhardt, Leonhardt Consort Teldec 1968
Franzjosef Maier, Bob van Asperen, Barthold Kuijken, Collegium Aureum DHM 1976
Elizabeth Wallfisch, Lisa Beznosiuk, Paul Nicholson Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment 1999
Michael Form, Pablo Valetti, Céline Frisch Café Zimmermann, 2008

It not being one of the more commonly heard Bach works, I did actually just listen to all of them. It can be fruitful that BaL prompts you to do that anorakish sort of thing. Ružicková and friends took 9.44 for first mov Allegro, Café Zimmermann a more sprightly 7.55. Favourites were, I think, Café Zimmermann and Collegium Aureum. I enjoyed van Asperen's harpsichord.

that CD version of BWV 1044 with Trevor Pinnock and Simon Standage is the 1984 recording with Lisa Beznosiuk, flute.
I don't think the 1978 recording (with the lovely photo above of Pinnock, Standage, and Stephen Preston on flute) has been on CD

Unbelievably this is the second week running that we'll have had a work which has never been covered on BaL before...

                      Well spotted. Mea culpa.
I think you're right about 1978 not being on CD - courtesy of your helpful Bach link.

                      Just found Leonhardt/Leonhardt/Bruggen, Brown/Standage/Rousset & Nicolet/Hetzel/Richter lurking in boxes.

Yes, I was just about to flag up the Rousset/Hogwood performance...I had forgotten that the AAM recorded it twice (second time with Egarr).

I'm currently comparing versions listening on YouTube and I must say the Rousset has a lovely recorded acoustic...you can hear everything but there is still a nice lot of space around the instruments...it flows beautifully and I find the Egarr a bit ponderous in comparison.

The La Stravaganza recording sounds like it was made in a swimming pool, too much even for me.

Just started on the Podger, that sounds nice. And I've found a version by the Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin which uses a fortepiano, a plausible option.

                        Looks like the aforementioned first English Concert version is now available as a download;

Bach, J.S.: Concerto for Flute, Violin, Harpsichord, and Strings in A Minor, BWV 1044; Brandenburg Concerto No in D Minor, BWV, 1050. Deutsche Grammophon: 4864291. Buy download online. Simon Standage (violin), Stephen Preston (flute), Trevor Pinnock (director) The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock

This will be a fascinating BAL for me.

... sadly the usually reliable bach.cantatas site is in error here : it claims that the Stephen Preston 1978 recording is available on CD - but the CDs it refers you to are the 1984 ones with Lisa Beznosiuk.

O, I had a happy morning fossicking among my CDs and chasing various unhelpful google searches. Yes, a happy morning

Ditto. (But I was also working, honest)

Yes, you're right, the site is wrong - fortunately, they link to an Amazon page with an image of the back of the box that says "(P)... / 1984 (BWV 1044)" - which saved me a costly mistake.
