I find I don't need more than one recording of many works, and the 1990 Vienna Octet Eclipse fits the bill nicely in this case. (Who's got enough space to store 76 different Bruckner 4ths or time to listen to them - I certainly haven't! )

My father told me , having worked it out with a pencil on an old envelope, that no-one should want more than 86 CDs, based on

the time available to listen to them; and

how often you would want to hear a CD you liked.

He could never understand why I wanted more than one recording of any work, and to have more than one recording of it by the same artists seemed sheer lunacy to him. Needless to say, I didn't agree.

I'm afraid I've exceeded your father's limit by a factor of 8 or 9, but still do my best to give each of my CDs at least an occasional play.

... rather scarily, I have just found a post I put up here some thirteen years ago -

« .. the world ended for me on the day my Nautilus sank for the first time beneath the waves. On that day, I had purchased my last books, my last journals, my last newspapers, and since then I have chosen to believe that humanity has no longer thought or written. »

Today I have spent the day rejigging all my CDs in what my partner with her deft turn of phrase calls a major peristalsis (it's all right buying Weiss or Zelenka, they can be stuck on the end - but if you buy Bach - let alone Alkan or Albeniz - then everything has to be moved along, moved along. You will gather my classification is primaily alphabetical. Unlike my books, which are largely classified chronologically... ) and in so doing I have really finally realised - I think - that I DON'T NEED TO BUY ANY MORE CDs ... Nudging sixty, there's no way I will be able to listen to what I already have...

And yet the temptation is still there... thank you, Caliban: five CDs of Fauré due here any moment...
At the age of 72, the number of CDs I have acquired since I was 'nudging sixty' is - quite alarming...

A year younger but I just checked and yes, more than half my CDs!

Thanks for that Perec essay, vinteuil: appropiate for me, as I did recently re-organise my books as well as my CDs. Simultaneously I decided to buy no more of either, as the line on a graph indicating the number owned intersected the line showing the (estimated) amount of time left to read or hear them .

So in a sense I did give in to the demand made by the women in my life : 'haven't you got enough?' . Formerly I would have replied 'It's not about quantity, but choice'.

I expect others have had similar experoieces. We may be the last to do so, as today's youth get their reading and listening from the internet.

Tell me about it - 65 years here and still no signs of stopping. I'll have to move house before long.

Tasmin is not afraid to criticise the versions on her shortlist, indeed she’s playing second examples from versions she pretty much dismissed on first hearing. Not sure that’s the best use of time?

Indeed, one of her final three has twice been strongly criticised on the grounds of recording balance. So why is it in the last three?

I seem to have missed what the winner was.

I didn't listen and it's not yet posted in the programme's listings.

There’s an intriguing ambiguity in this frank post Smitts - it’s not clear whether “ not quantity , but choice “ refers to CD’s , women or even both!
