I listened today with headphones. It’s still mp3 so it’s hard to Dre direct comparison to other recordings but for mp3 it wasn’t bad

Funnily enough that early digital Meneses/Karajan Don Quixote sounded better in the car ! Tamed the glare .

I have been able to obtain a cheap second hand copy of the splendidly recorded SCO/Mackerras recording. Unsurprisingly , it is conspicuously well conducted and unfolds naturally and is all of a piece but it all sounds a bit undernourished to my ears especially the first movement.

Pleased to have listened again to Ivan Hewett’s earlier BAL for it put me on to the thrilling Boston SO/Munch recording of Brahms 1 - exciting from the first bar . The Boston players singing their hearts out.

Thanks for the reminder. I’ve been meaning to bring down the Munch Brick from the shelf and listen to that.

I have not brought down the Munch Brick but I _have_ managed to get hold of the Loughran Brahmses thanks to a well-known auction site (and a Welsh friend who took the delivery to save on postage and brought them to a shared gig in Tallinn) and if the first two movements of 1 are any guide this will be very pleasant company indeed.
