I missed this one due to being away on holiday. Do I take it from this comment that Record Review, including BAL, is no longer live?

Not at all. As I say, it was cut during the broadcast – i.e. as we were broadcasting.

Picked up a very cheap copy of the Meneses /karajan recording . It’s very good to my ears especially the late Antonio Meneses. Michael Kennedy was rather harsh on it in Gramophone when it first came out .

Is that the digital Karajan recording?

Yes, made in the Jesus-Christus Kirche, apparently in January 1986. It's in the DG 'collectors edition' 5-CD box.

Not, alas, in the Jesus-Christus Kirche but in the acoustically inferior Philharmonie.

Yes there are some issues with the recording. Rather obvious spotlighting,

I’m out of town so unable to check my CDs and it’s very difficult to tell online when a record was first made because of confusion with the reissue dates. Anyway I like that performance and Meneses playing but the early digital recording is hard and glassy

I admit I was surprised to see the DG info does say Jesus-Christus-Kirche. I still prefer Herbert's earlier one with Fournier.

I have the Meneses recording which is included in the 1980s Karajan box and the book accompanying the box gives the recording date as January 1986 and the venue as the Philharmonie.

The recordings for this reissue were newly remastered and consequently the sound has been much improved, losing that early digital glare.

I recall that Karajan, Meneses and the BPO gave a performance of Don Quixote on January 25 1986 as part of a concert celebrating Furtwangler"s centenary and which was broadcast live on R3.

Lovely cover picture if you get the vinyl, maybe reproduced on the DG originals CD.
